What this is
This book covers the early months, from the first meeting to about month three: the three houses that open easiest for you, in order, and what to do in each.
Three houses, in order.
- 01The easiest openThe LighthouseYour Ideal. The start of their chapter is below.
- 02The steady oneNamed inside
- 03The one that takes workNamed inside
Each part carries the same working set: why it pulls, how to recognize one in the first two weeks, what each of you is misreading in the first six weeks while it is still fixable, the exact points where it breaks, the sentences to send, the lines to hand them, the moment to stop, your own rule for when the failure is yours, and the repair when you have already let it run.
It is not a compatibility score and it is not a prediction. The ranking is about ease of opening — how much translation the first six months cost — and nothing else. A house that takes work, with somebody who has read the translation, routinely outlasts an easy house where neither of you ever had to learn anything. That is not a consolation line. It is the single most useful thing in the book, and it is why the third house is here at all.
One more thing before we start. Every failure described in this book has two halves, and one half is yours. Not most of it — one half. You will find your half described plainly and more than once, including in a rule at the end of each part that exists specifically to tell you when the thing going wrong is you. That is the useful part: your half is the one you can actually change.
Part 01 · The easiest open
The Lighthouse
The house that takes you seriously, slowly
01Why it pulls
They take the two-in-the-morning version of you as the main one. You have spent years being loved as the warm one and consulted about almost nothing, invited to everything and asked for an opinion on nothing serious. A Lighthouse does the reverse from about week two: they ask a real question, they wait through the pause, and they remember the answer six weeks later and bring it back to you — quietly, not performed for anyone else’s benefit. For a house whose standing complaint is loved and underestimated, being taken seriously by somebody obviously deep is the pull.
They will not clown your tender share. This house has a specific loyalty tell: once trust starts, they side with you in public, quietly, and they do not turn the vulnerable thing you said into material later. You have almost certainly had the opposite happen, more than once, and decided it was fine. It is a different experience to be handled carefully by somebody who does not make a performance of handling you carefully.
You pull them out of the future and into the evening. They live in a long view and can spend a whole Saturday in a version of next year. You are the only instrument that reliably brings them back into the actual room, the actual meal, the actual body they are in — and they know it, and they want it. It is not you being tolerated as the fun one. It is the specific thing they cannot manufacture for themselves.
02Spotting one in the first two weeks
Six signs. See three of them in the first two weeks and you’re almost certainly with a Lighthouse.
- They bring back something small you told them. A detail from the first week comes back days later, said quietly to you, not to impress anyone. They were listening more closely than it looked.
- Warmer alone than in a group. One to one, they open up. In a loud room their energy visibly drops, even while they stay polite.
- A fun date gets a second half. After an entirely concrete evening they ask about direction or values: “What do you actually want, long term?” For them, the evening wasn’t finished.
- They ask for the shape of the plan. Where, who, how long, earlier and more exactly than you’d think to offer. An open “maybe Saturday” visibly bothers them.
- They take your side, quietly. Someone is a bit off with you in public, and afterward they say one quiet sentence that makes it clear whose side they’re on.
- They vanish for a day or two, then come back as if nothing happened. No drama, no explanation. They’ve been deciding something, and they won’t mention it.
The sample stops here. The rest of the Lighthouse chapter, and your other two, are in the book.

What’s in the rest
- The rest of the Lighthouse chapter: the first six weeks from both seats, the points where it breaks, what to say and when, and when to stop.
- Your steady one and the one that takes work, named, each at the same depth.
- The engine: the moves that run under all three houses.
- If the person you’re seeing is none of the three.
- One week to start with, and your three on one page.
