The story

Autumn wind, autumn rain

In July 1907, at the Datong School in Shaoxing, Qiu Jin was told to run. She was 31 and in charge of the school, and she stayed.

The warning was real. On 6 July her ally Xu Xilin had shot the governor of Anhui province in a failed rising, and he was put to death the next day. Suspicion was already moving from him toward her school. Friends urged her to leave while she still could.

To see why she would not go, look at what she had already walked away from.

She was born in 1875 into a gentry family in the last decades of the Qing empire. Her father arranged her marriage, and by her late twenties she had a husband, two children and a settled place in a respectable house. That was meant to be the whole story.

In 1904, at 28, she sold her jewelry, left her husband and children, and sailed for Tokyo to study.

Wildfires often know that feeling, and it is hard to name: the story has already been decided, with you written in as a minor part. Her leaving had a real cost, and her children paid it. She went anyway, as far as she could go.

In Tokyo she found people who believed what she believed, and a room to say it in. She gave speeches that moved halls full of students. In 1905 she joined the Revolutionary Alliance, the Tongmenghui. Back in China, she started a magazine for women, the Chinese Women's Journal. Having found her own way out, she wanted to hand the door to others.

That generosity also made her visible. She was building something in public, at full volume, and inviting everyone in. By 1907 she was running the Datong School, which doubled as a base for the revolutionaries.

So when the warning came, running was not simple. She left no account of why she stayed. It may have been resolve, or loyalty to her students, or the feeling that after so many speeches, flight would unsay them all. Wildfires will recognize every one of those pulls.

Soldiers, several hundred by one account, surrounded the school, and she was taken. She would not confess. Pressed to write, she gave her interrogators seven characters of verse.

“Autumn wind, autumn rain: the sorrow of it is enough to kill.”
Qiu Jin's only written answer to her interrogators, July 1907

Her family name, Qiu, means autumn. Before dawn on 15 July 1907 she was publicly beheaded in Shaoxing.

Twenty years later the writer Lu Xun, who came from the same town, wrote that she had been clapped to death by applause. Read kindly, it is a warning about the crowd that cheers a brave person toward danger and is gone when the danger arrives.

Her chosen family stayed. On 25 January 1908 her friends Wu Zhiying and Xu Zihua buried her beside the West Lake in Hangzhou, as she had wished, and an official demanded that they be punished for it. The applause had stopped long before. The two women came anyway.
